JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is the universal lingua franca of modern web software. From microservice REST responses and GraphQL payloads to configuration files (package.json, tsconfig.json), JSON transmits structured data across the web.

However, because JSON parsers follow strict ECMA-404 specification parsing rules, a single missing quote or misplaced trailing comma will crash an entire frontend application or break server payload deserialization.

Top 5 Common JSON Syntax Traps

❌ 1. Trailing Commas in Arrays or Objects

Standard JSON strictly forbids trailing commas after the last property:

{ "name": "Emi", "role": "Developer", } // ❌ SyntaxError: Unexpected token }

❌ 2. Single Quotes Instead of Double Quotes

Unlike JavaScript, ECMA-404 JSON requires double quotes (") for all object keys and string values:

{ 'status': 'success' } // ❌ SyntaxError: Unexpected token '

❌ 3. Unescaped Control Characters & Newlines

Multilines inside string values must be explicitly escaped using \n rather than literal line breaks.

Format, Beautify & Validate JSON Payloads
